Latvian neurosurgeons perform complex tumor resection on patient from Libya – International case coordination by Prof. Dr. Markus Masin and German experts

Riga, 2 July 2025

A high-risk neurosurgical intervention was successfully performed yesterday at a specialized clinic in Riga on a patient from Libya. The surgery was carried out by two Latvian neurosurgeons, Dr. Janis Slezins MD, PhD and Dr. Raimonds Mikijanskis, MD, who were selected as the first-choice surgical team by a German–Latvian expert consortium coordinated by Prof. Dr. Markus Masin.

The patient had been diagnosed with a solid tumor at the craniocervical junction, in close proximity to the left vertebral artery and the upper spinal cord. Due to the complexity of the case and the required microsurgical expertise, the interdisciplinary team decided that Riga, and specifically this Latvian neurosurgical team, offered the optimal conditions for a safe and successful outcome.

The Surgery:

The tumor was completely removed in a high-precision microsurgical procedure performed simultaneously by both surgeons. Their deep experience in craniovertebral surgery and vascular control was essential for navigating the delicate anatomy of the area. The operation proceeded without complications and the patient is recovering under close postoperative observation.

Prof. Dr. Markus Masin, medical scientist and director of the Medical Institute for Nutrition Science and Technology (MINST), who coordinated the international planning, commented:

“Dr. Slezins and Dr. Mikijanskis are internationally respected neurosurgeons. Their technical skill, experience, and teamwork made them the clear recommendation from our German and Latvian partners. We are proud that Latvia offers such a level of excellence.”

Strategic Vision:

Through its international medical coordination efforts, the MINST Institute aims to bring more patients from abroad to Latvia for highly specialized care – connecting them to outstanding experts in the national and cross-border medical network.

“This is good for the patients, good for the Latvian health system, and a strategic contribution to Latvia’s visibility as a medical excellence destination,” says Prof. Masin.
