Introduction to the Institute and its history

The intellectual foundation for the establishment of MINST was laid at the beginning of 2020. Since then, significant commitment and determination have been invested in bringing this idea to fruition. Numerous discussions with colleagues from various disciplines ensued, and valuable advice and assistance from the Latvian authorities were instrumental in obtaining the approval for the institute. Together, we have successfully navigated the past four years. At this point, it is essential to honor Dr. Theo Schrievers. Dr. Schrievers passed away on 05.08.2022 after a brief, serious illness. He was among the pioneers who believed in the potential of MINST and enriched us with his innovative ideas and groundbreaking research. His contributions will forever be remembered and cherished as we continue to build on the foundation he helped establish.

Information on the Institute's guidelines and goals

MINST remains a young institute, yet it harbors the ambition to elevate the medical care landscape to unprecedented heights. Within our holistic framework, findings from research, teaching, and technology are seamlessly integrated to forge an interdisciplinary and comprehensive foundation for future prophylaxis systems, treatment approaches, and aftercare protocols. Our experts from diverse disciplines collaborate closely, dedicated to processing and translating the latest findings in their respective fields. Their collective efforts aim to make these insights accessible to patients, academics, students, and educators alike, thus fostering a community well-versed in innovative and effective healthcare solutions.

Cooperations

Nutrition profoundly influences the efficacy of cancer therapies, serving as a pivotal external factor in oncological care. In this context, targeted and complementary nutritional medical support is crucial in improving both the course and outcomes of cancer treatment. Although critical, the nutritional management of cancer patients represents an area with significant potential for enhancement.

Optimization of Nutritional Management in Oncology

Efforts to optimize nutritional support in oncology include:

  1. Research: Bridging knowledge gaps through dedicated research in nutritional medicine specifically tailored for oncological diseases.
  2. Education: Enhancing physician awareness through structured education and training programs, crucial for integrating nutritional strategies into standard cancer care.
  3. Routine Assessments: Establishing protocols for the consistent assessment and follow-up of nutritional interventions to ensure they meet patient needs effectively.

Strategic Collaboration Initiatives

Our collaboration with the proposed partner aims to encompass three primary areas: research, education, and health services. Initially, we will focus on joint research efforts by developing a comprehensive research plan and protocols for nutritional intake and monitoring. Following this, we will introduce a training module for first-year residents, incorporating lectures from guest professors—including our partners—to foster a deeper understanding and sensitivity towards nutritional issues in medical practice.

Establishment of Specialized Facilities

The third phase of our initiative involves setting up a specialized nutrition clinic within tertiary health institutions to directly address and manage patient needs under expert care.

DSKM – MINST Cooperation

In collaboration with the Medical Institute of Nutrition Science and Technology (MINST), the German Foundation against Malnutrition (DSKM) has launched a seminar series. These seminars, which began in April 2023, are available both in-person and online, depending on the topic.

Expertise and Educational Focus

The DSKM aims to leverage MINST's medical expertise to enhance and broaden the scope of medical care, particularly in managing malabsorption syndromes post-surgery or within oncological and geriatric contexts. This includes specialized areas such as diabetology, endocrinology, haematology, and gastroenterology.

Lecture Topics Based on MINST's Specialist Areas

Based on the information provided by MINST on the specialist areas represented, lectures are planned in the following areas:

  • Dr. Tuna: ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) Medicine, Aesthetic Surgery
  • Dr. Markus Gotwald: Wound Management in the Inpatient Setting
  • Dr. Martin Holtmeier: Nutrition and Sport, Wound Care
  • Specialists: Weight Optimization for Obesity and Malnutrition
  • Patients: Healthy Nutrition in Active Sports
  • Prof. Markus Masin: Clinical Nutrition, Cancer Nutrition, Short Bowel Syndrome, Diabetes Types 1, 2, and 3
  • Specialists: Risk Factors, Symptoms, and Monitoring
  • Patients: Home Monitoring and Diet Optimization
  • Dr. Giuseppe Sciurba: Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) Measurements and Their Evaluation, possibly co-lectured by Dr. Holtmeier or Prof. Masin

Target Audience and Educational Goals

The seminar series targets medical specialists and care institutions, emphasizing the prevention and monitoring of specific diseases through advanced training seminars. This initiative also includes certificated training courses on port care, blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills in line with current hygiene standards.

Future Initiatives and Public Engagement

Plans are underway for further seminar series, including the "Sylt Health Days" slated for September/October 2024 in Germany. These events aim to engage a broader audience, including general practitioners and specialists interested in nutrition, sport, and vitality.

Continuous Development and Outreach

MINST and DSKM are committed to continuous development and outreach, with seminar details to be prominently featured on their respective websites. Collaborations with healthcare associations across Germany are also being considered to maximize the impact and reach of these educational endeavors.

Conclusion

By integrating advanced nutritional research, education, and clinical practices, the collaboration between MINST and DSKM represents a forward-thinking approach to enhancing oncological and general healthcare outcomes through specialized nutritional support.
